Box Shy is a collaboration created with Esther Palmer and Shana Burns (we work together as Seen Performance). It is the first piece in a series—called The Party Project—that brings performance to social settings that are non-traditional for performance art. We make these pieces using a round-robin collaboration process. For Box Shy Esther began by making a dance, Shana added an animation to the dance, and I finished by composing music to go with both. When it was my turn, I decided to dig out some instruments I had built using MaxMSP and used for several different 60x365 pieces. Combining the instruments I built for the Simple Sin(e) pieces with the instrument from Clouds I was able to build a new performance instrument.
